Guide
Australian address format
How to write a postal address in Australia the way Australia Post expects.
Recipient name Unit/Number Street name Street type SUBURB STATE POSTCODE
Jane Citizen 1/123 George Street SYDNEY NSW 2000
The rules
- Put the suburb, state and postcode on the last line, in that order, separated by single spaces.
- Write that last line in CAPITAL LETTERS — it helps Australia Post's automated sorting.
- The postcode is always four digits and comes last (e.g. 2000).
- Use the state or territory abbreviation, not the full name.
- No commas are required.
- For mail sent from overseas, add AUSTRALIA as the final line.

Frequently asked questions
Where does the postcode go in an Australian address?+
On the last line, after the suburb and state — for example “SYDNEY NSW 2000”. Australian postcodes are always four digits.
Should the address be in capital letters?+
Australia Post recommends writing the last line (suburb, state and postcode) in capitals to help automated sorting. The rest of the address is optional but capitals are fine.
Do I use commas?+
No commas are needed. Australia Post asks for the suburb, state and postcode separated by single spaces on one line.
