Frequently asked questions
Is the distance by road or straight line?+
It is the straight-line (as-the-crow-flies) distance between the centre of each postcode. It is not the driving distance, which depends on the available roads and routes.
How is the distance calculated?+
We use the geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) of each postcode's centre and the Haversine formula, which accounts for the curvature of the Earth.
Why can't some postcodes be calculated?+
A small number of postcodes have no registered coordinates (for example, PO-box-only postcodes). If either postcode lacks coordinates, the distance can't be calculated.
